Lives Changed: Kristyn Yepa
Nursing has immense power to change lives—and no form of it more so than community health nursing, which expands the caring and advocacy roles to include the entire community as the patient.
Nursing remains the heart and soul of care—but the scope of the profession has greatly expanded to answer growing needs. Today’s nurses are making critical decisions in an environment that is high-tech, complex and sophisticated.
What is a nurse? Today, he or she may be the nurse practitioner who runs a nurse-managed clinic in a rural or urban setting. Or the internationally recognized researcher who is exploring and redefining how care should be delivered. Or the vital midwife who serves women who would otherwise be forced to travel long distances for maternity and childbirth care. Or the exceptional teacher who inspires nursing students every day. Or the policy analyst who writes laws and legislation to improve access to equitable care.
For more than half a century, the profession of nursing has been taught, practiced and researched at UNM College of Nursing. The unique people and places of New Mexico, and the special needs they represent, have long defined a diverse, practical, forward-looking and problem-solving nursing education. Valuable partnerships and clinical opportunities with the UNM Health Sciences Center, one of the nation’s best, continue to power the College’s programs and mission.
Today, the College offers New Mexico’s largest baccalaureate program, graduate programs ranked in the top 20 percent of America’s nursing schools, and acclaimed specialty programs—including a doctorate focused on health policy and a landmark nurse-midwifery program recognized as one of the three best in the nation.
The list of vital needs in the College is as long as the list of people who pursue knowledge within and beyond its walls, but there are some common threads: support for more nursing faculty to train students in response to the growing nursing shortage; endowment for our nurse-midwifery program. The College’s vision for cutting-edge nursing education in New Mexico is clear, and now is your moment to help power that vision.
