The Enos Family

The Enos Family

It’s impossible to fully understand until it happens to you: Your child faces a potentially life-threatening problem. First comes the shock and the fear, then comes the question of where to turn and who can you trust.

Caroline Enos and her family know this all too well. Her daughter was born with developmental delays that cause a myriad of problems. Among the worst were febrile seizures that lasted as long as 40 minutes. A child under that kind of duress can easily stop breathing. But Enos knew just where to turn and just who to trust: the pediatric emergency department at UNM Children’s Hospital—the only one of its kind in New Mexico.

“Their expertise and care were extraordinary,” Caroline says. “They were able to keep our daughter alive and prevent brain damage, and after she was out of danger, UNM Children’s Hospital brought an amazing group of experts to our side. There’s nothing like it anywhere else in the region. From neurology to genetic counseling to developmental needs specialists, we had total access to the most up-to-date knowledge and people who really, really cared about our daughter. They never failed to listen to us, explain the care to us and stay with us in the moment.”

Enos and her husband are both scientists, and their relatives on the East Coast weren’t quite convinced that such outstanding care was really available in Albuquerque. At the relatives’ urging, the Enoses sought second opinions from Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital, and the doctors there confirmed and lauded everything that was being done to help Enos’s daughter. Today, at age five, she is doing very well—and the Enos family is still trusting and turning to UNM Children’s Hospital.

“There’s a lot of need in this community,” says Caroline, “and UNM Hospitals handles it superbly. People rely on that knowledge and care. I know we certainly did.”

How many worlds, small and large, will the care and discovery at UNM Hospitals transform? With your vital support, the answer is “many.”
