School of Architecture + Planning

From the heart of the city to the spirit of the pueblo, our environment is the built environment. Today marks is a pivotal moment for the professions of architecture, landscape architecture and community planning.

For more than half a century, UNM School of Architecture + Planning has been a guiding light for the built environment and the training ground for the architects, landscape architects and community planners who shape it. Combining an innovative approach to design with the power of unmatched cultural diversity, regional heritage and the one-of-a-kind landscape of New Mexico, leading-edge practice and scholarship have become the School’s hallmark. It is unique in the nation. No institution is better prepared to educate the leaders and builders of a changing world.

New Ideas and a New Ethos

Housed in a beautiful, cutting-edge teaching and learning facility designed by world-renowned New Mexico architect Antoine Predock, the School of Architecture + Planning is training the next generation, led by a faculty that includes exceptional designers, teachers and scholars. Together, students and faculty are pioneering new ideas, knowledge, materials and techniques, from sustainable buildings designed to co-exist with arid landscapes, to historic preservation and regionalism, to vibrant town planning.

In a world of shrinking resources, growing populations and complex environmental challenges, the new ethos of sustainability, resource conservation and energy efficiency have become the driving forces in design and planning. Balance must be found between how we live and the world in which we live. It is the architect and the community planner who create that balance.

Now Is Your Moment

The list of vital needs in the School is as long as the list of people who pursue knowledge within and beyond its walls, but there are some common threads: new fabrication labs; support for facilitating community engaged design; and enabling each student to have first-hand experience with cultures and perspectives around the world. The School’s vision for cutting-edge architecture and planning in New Mexico is clear, and now is your moment to help power that vision.
