Lives Changed: The Enos Family
It’s hard to understand until it happens to you: Your child faces a potentially life-threatening problem. First comes the shock and the fear, then comes the question of where to turn and who to trust.
Here—the only academic medical center in New Mexico—is where people turn for care and hope, and where the lives of virtually everyone in our community have been touched, whether in times of crisis or joy.
For the people of New Mexico, UNM Hospitals is both the first place to turn and the last line of defense in maintaining and recovering their best health. New Mexico’s only Level 1 trauma center (the best of the best) is here, as is the state’s only provider of 13 pediatric subspecialties, each offering the highest level of care. Medical and nursing students hone their skills and compassion here, while new biomedical knowledge and innovative health delivery models become new treatments through translational (and transformational) research.
UNM Hospitals treat more than 90,000 emergency patients and 450,000 outpatients every year. The hospital system includes UNM Hospital; the innovative UNM Children’s Hospital; the unique Carrie Tingley Hospital for children and adolescents with complex orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions, developmental issues and long-term physical disabilities; UNM Adult and Children’s Psychiatric Centers; and the UNM Cancer Center. As the main teaching hospital for UNM Schools of Medicine and Nursing, as well as for the College of Pharmacy, the next generation of New Mexico’s health providers trains here.
All corners of the state are also touched by UNM Hospitals, as a network of 43 local clinics and a landmark telemedicine/telehealth network links all of New Mexico to the latest in medical research and health information.
The list of vital needs in the Hospitals is as long as the list of people cared for and discoveries made within their walls, but there are some common threads: a new Pediatric Ambulatory Center to help children; new centers for care and research in orthopedics, vision, neurosciences and psychiatry. The Hospitals’ vision for care, teaching and discovery in New Mexico is clear, and now is your moment to help power that vision.
